Jean-Marc Egly

Jean-Marc Egly is an elected member of the French Academy of Sciences since 2005, and is the Research Director Emeritus at INSERM (U1258), Strasbourg, France. He currently serves as Vice Director & CEO of the Taiwan International Bio Research Center (TIBRC), College of Medicine, National Taiwan University (NTU), and as a Distinguished Chair Professor for Research at multiple NTU institutes such as Yonglin Institute of Health, GIP-TRIAD, Program for Precision Health and Intelligent Medicine of the Graduate School of Advanced Technology, and Center for Biotechnology. He also serves as a Distinguished Professor at the School of Medicine of National Sun Yat-sen University.

He received Ph.D. degrees in Chemistry (1970) and Biochemistry (1976) respectively in Strasbourg, France, and completed postdoctoral research in the Department of Biochemistry at Uppsala University, Sweden, in 1977.

Professor Egly has had a distinguished career in molecular biology, protein chemistry, biotechnology, transcription, and DNA repair. He served as Professor at the École Supérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg from 1982 to 1993 and has subsequently held numerous senior scientific advisory and leadership positions in France and internationally. These include chairing scientific councils and advisory boards for organizations such as the French National Research Agency, INSERM, Institut Curie, Institut Gustave Roussy, and the Institute for Research on Cancer and Ageing of Nice. He has also served as a scientific adviser in the life sciences sector and contributed to national and international research policy.

His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of transcription and DNA repair, particularly the transcription factor TFIIH, nucleotide excision repair, DNA damage responses, and genome stability. His work has contributed to understanding the molecular basis of disorders including xeroderma pigmentosum, trichothiodystrophy, and Cockayne syndrome, as well as mechanisms relevant to cancer biology and therapeutic development.

Professor Egly has authored 285 scientific publications, including papers in Science, Nature, Cell, Molecular Cell, and Nature Genetics. His research has made major contributions to elucidating the links between transcription and DNA repair and the functions of TFIIH and its associated factors.

His honors include membership in EMBO and the French Academy of Sciences, the Descartes Research Award of the European Union, the AGF/Athena Award, the Grand Prix INSERM, and the Grand Prix of the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale. He has also received an ERC Advanced Grant and the French distinctions of Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite and Officier de la Légion d’Honneur.
