Biography

Professor Simon Buczacki MA MB BChir PhD FRCS is the Richard Blackwell Pharsalia Professor of Colorectal Surgery at the University of Oxford. He is Associate Head of the Nuffield Department of Surgical Sciences, leads the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre Surgical Theme, and is Director of Graduate Studies for the Oxford Cancer PhD Programme.

He studied medicine at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, before completing a Cancer Research UK funded PhD in colorectal cancer biology. His clinical practice focuses on colorectal cancer and small intestinal neuroendocrine tumour surgery, while his translational research investigates cancer cell identity, differentiation and tumour evolution using patient derived models and contemporary genetic approaches.

His research has received substantial competitive funding, including Cancer Research UK Clinician Scientist and Advanced Clinician Scientist Fellowships and a £1.5 million CRUK Programme Foundation Award. He has published widely in cancer biology and surgery, including in Nature, Nature Genetics and Science, alongside clinical research in perioperative weight loss and surgical quality.

His awards include a National Clinical Impact Award, the John Nicholls Lecture and the British Journal of Surgery Prize. Outside medicine, he enjoys running, mountain sports, country pursuits and photography.
