Cheng-Wei Lu

Dr. Cheng-Wei Lu is Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, New Taipei City, Taiwan, and a joint-appointment professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Yuan Ze University. He also holds an adjunct faculty position in the Department of Anesthesiology, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University.

Education: He received his MD from National Taiwan University (1992–1999), a Master's from the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences at Fu Jen Catholic University (2006–2008), and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Yuan Ze University (2009–2013).

Professional experience: Following residency at National Taiwan University Hospital (1999–2003), Dr. Lu joined Far Eastern Memorial Hospital as an attending physician in 2003, where he has practiced continuously since. He has held faculty appointments at both National Taiwan University College of Medicine and Yuan Ze University, and has served in leadership roles at the Taiwan Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiologists, including Secretary-General (2021–2024) and current executive board member.

Research interests: His work spans cardiac and geriatric anesthesia, perioperative pain control, and physiological signal analysis (EEG-based depth-of-anesthesia monitoring, intracranial pressure complexity), alongside a substantial line of synaptosome-based research on how natural compounds and anesthetic/analgesic agents modulate glutamate release and neuroprotection. He is also engaged in perioperative environmental sustainability, including carbon-footprint analysis of surgical and anesthetic practice.

Representative achievements: Dr. Lu has authored well over 100 peer-reviewed publications in journals including Brain, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Anesthesiology, and Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and has led or co-led more than a dozen national research grants on neuroprotection and perioperative monitoring. His honors include the Taiwan Society of Anesthesiologists' Young Investigator Award, the Yu-Hsiang Hsu Memorial Foundation Distinguished Professor Award, and the Excellence Lecture Award from the Taiwan Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiologists.
