Biography

Dr. Hsiao-Chi Chuang is Professor in the School of Respiratory Therapy, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University (TMU), Taiwan. He also serves as Vice Director of the TMU Research Center of Thoracic Medicine, Adjunct Investigator at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, National Health Research Institutes, and President of the Taiwan Society for Aerosol in Medicine.

Dr. Chuang’s research focuses on how aerosol-derived reactive oxygen species influence cellular signaling, metabolic regulation, and injury responses in the lung. His work examines the mechanisms linking air pollution and other environmental exposures to oxidative stress, inflammation, epithelial dysfunction, and respiratory diseases, particularly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. His translational research aims to identify therapeutic targets and advance innovative aerosol-based interventions.

He earned his PhD in Pathophysiology and Repair from Cardiff University, United Kingdom, an MSc in Occupational Medicine and Industrial Hygiene from National Taiwan University, and a BSc in Occupational Safety and Health from China Medical University, Taiwan. His international experience includes a visiting professorship at Imperial College London.

Dr. Chuang has received numerous honors for research, teaching, and innovation, including Taiwan’s National Innovation Awards, the Malaysia Technology Expo International Innovation Silver Award, and repeated TMU Research Excellence Awards. He has also been recognized among the world’s top 2% of scientists. He is an Editor of the Journal of Hazardous Materials and an Associate Editor of Frontiers in Medicine. His current work includes leading the Taiwan component of the Wellcome Trust–supported PREDICT-ASIA program.
