Biography
Dr. Chung-Hwan Chen is the Chief Executive Officer of the Regenerative Medicine and Cell Therapy Research Centre at Kaohsiung Medical University (KMU), Taiwan, a position he has held since August 2025. He is also a Professor at KMU, Director of the Orthopaedic Research Center, Attending Physician in the Department of Orthopaedics at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, Jointly Appointed Professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, and President of the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association.
Dr. Chen received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Kaohsiung Medical University in 1994 and completed his Ph.D. at the same institution in 2013. Following his residency training in orthopaedic surgery, he has devoted more than two decades to clinical practice, academic research, and medical education in orthopaedics and regenerative medicine. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership positions, including Director of the Department of Orthopaedics at Kaohsiung Municipal Ta-Tung Hospital, President of the Taiwan Orthopedic Research Society, General Secretary of the Taiwan Osteoporosis Association, and Deputy General Secretary of the Taiwan Orthopedic Association.
His research focuses on regenerative medicine, orthopaedic surgery, musculoskeletal tissue engineering, cartilage and bone regeneration, biomaterials, additive manufacturing, osteoporosis, and innovative therapies for degenerative musculoskeletal diseases. He is particularly interested in translating basic scientific discoveries into clinically applicable regenerative treatments through interdisciplinary collaboration integrating stem cell biology, biomaterials, and tissue engineering.
Dr. Chen has received multiple prestigious awards recognizing his contributions to biomedical innovation. In 2024, he received the 21st National Innovation Award for his work on thrombomodulin- and miRNA-based strategies for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis. In 2020, he was honored with the 17th National Innovation Award for innovative additive manufacturing technologies for bioceramic applications. Earlier, he received the First Prize for Best Abstract at The Acelity Surgical Wound Forum in 2018. These achievements reflect his longstanding commitment to advancing translational research and developing innovative regenerative therapies that improve patient care.
Today, Dr. Chen continues to lead multidisciplinary research programs in regenerative medicine and cell therapy while fostering international collaborations, promoting translational research, and advancing innovations in musculoskeletal health and regenerative medicine.
